Dorothy M. Wallace C.O.P.E. Family & Consumer Sciences students at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden1/30/2019 On January 30, 2019, The Family and Consumer Sciences students, from Dorothy M. Wallace C.O.P.E. Center, traveled to the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden for the Ultimate Leadership Experience.
Students learned about Ethnobotany, the study of past and present interrelationships between human cultures and plants. Our young ladies became knowledgeable about the importance of plants to our culture, our heritage and our environment. This was followed by a delicious lunch. On Saturday, December 1, 2018, Family and Consumer Sciences student, Odalia A., travel from Dorothy M. Wallace C.O.P.E. Center to the Miami Dade College – Wolfson Campus for the Ultimate Leadership Experience. She participated in the Fifth Annual Innovate—Career Technical Education Challenge (CTE) Competition in “Promoting Your Teaching Academy”, which it is the first for the Early Childhood Education program and our students first time competing in this event.
“Promoting Your Teaching Academy” Video Campaign Challenge allows students to develop a 3-5 minute video to promote their respective Career Technical Education Teaching Academies. Our students selected Early Childhood Education program to display basic marketing communication and program promotion skills. The organizational skills of Odalia A. and Claudia R. contributed to the success and completion of this project. Other student participants were: Cassandra R., Jeanette A., Carolina R., Karen R., Jaynaya L., Klara G., Andrea O., Lexius M., Dessiree R., Brianna M., Camila L., Marisol M., Emely P., Alexis N., Karen G., Layde G., Ahtziri G. & Son, Dyamond D. & Son, and Dianda M. & Daughter. Odalia A. used her public speaking skills to answer successful pertinent questions (5 minutes) proposed by the judges about her involvements in creating the Early Childhood Education video for “Promoting Your Teaching Academy” challenge. Odalia A. won third place and received a certificate of achievement The mission of Family & Consumer Sciences is to strengthen families and empower individuals to take action for the well-being of self and others in the home, workplace, community and the world.
The purpose of these courses is to provide students preliminary experiences with skills related to a variety of careers. Course content will consist of instruction in making career choices, basic employability skills that relate to content extracted from any family and consumer sciences exploratory course including the development of leadership and organization skills within the program. |
